Mums and cubs, undoubtedly one of the most altruistic phenomenon of them all and perhaps the single form of human love and relationship that is uncompromised by faith, politics, social and racial delineations.
Across the entire animal kingdom, motherhood operates under it's own universal laws of love. A polar bear mum will gain over 200 pounds during her pregnancy and spend 9 months in isolation in a small den preparing for the birth of her cubs. She goes up to 8months without food, never leaving the den and gives birth alone. When Spring arrives she teaches her cubs to hunt and how to survive in the wild. For the first two to three years of her cubs lives, she will never leave their side.
Photographing mums and their children is incredibly rewarding. I know the portraits that we make will be valued more than any other gift mum could ever want for. My kids are all grown up and despite their very vocal protests of our yearly santa photo, we all come together for our annual family portrait ritual. I keep our very first family photo on display and next to it the most recent family photo. With each passing year the message becomes clearer, time stops for no one but I couldn't be a happier mum to have grabbed that small slice of time with my cubs.
