Went along to Malcolm Fackender's Lighting Workshop today for a much needed and overdue therapeutic pixel creating session. What's not to like about hanging out with fellow photog friends doing what we love most? Malcolm runs a great full day class for anyone wanting to learn how to light. Took my much unloved shoot through umbrella's for a spin and rediscovered just how diverse a look you can get with this humble light modifier. I deliberately left my favourite, tried and tested light shapers to force myself to work more sparingly and break away from my default setups. I also played with the very portable Honl grids on our handsome male model below, James. One look at this guy set me on a path of hard rim light.
I also decided to not take any props, wardrobe, makeup or accessories and just go with whatever was made available to our group. Ok, I'll come clean. I did have the best intentions and did not pack anything the night before as I prepped the gear. But hey, who was I kidding?!. As I walked out the front door I couldn't help but grab a pair of white sunglasses and a scarf. I reasoned they were after all, small enough to fit in my main camera bag.
In my defence I only used the glasses and I actually quite like how it worked out in the image below. Our wonderful model Sharon made it all look easy.
What can I say, it's in my blood.
